By BUGA


Bicycles are popular in Aveiro. You may use a BUGA, a freely available city bicycle, and leave it in one of the BUGA stops inside the campus. In fact, you may drive a BUGA anywhere inside Aveiro.

By Car

The main roads to Aveiro are:

  • A1, which links Lisbon and Porto, in the North-South direction.

  • IP5, which connects Aveiro to Spain, crossing Portugal in the East-West direction.

    If you are travelling on A1, exit at Albergaria, and then enter IP5 heading West (Aveiro).
  • You may want to check the following more detailed map of the A1 (Auto-Estrada do Norte). If you are travelling on IP5, take the exit Aveiro.

    Aveiro is connected via the IP5/A25 and IC1 to the main national A1 motorway, linking with Lisbon and Porto and other major routes. The IP5/A25 also links to the coast and beaches to the west and inland to the east.
    By BUS

    Rede Nacional De Expressos connects Aveiro with the rest of Portugal by express coach.

    The city of Aveiro is also centrally located on Portugal's main railway line between Lisbon and Porto (Linha do Norte). The fast Alfa Pendular and Inter-Cidades trains stop at Aveiro.

    Arriving From Lisbon Airport

    Take a public transportation or taxi to the main train station, Gare do Oriente.

    To go from Lisbon Airport to Gare do Oriente by bus: take bus number 44 near the arrivals terminal in the direction “Moscavide”. Step down at the stop “Pavilhão multiusos – Gare do Oriente”.

    Lisbon airport is located 7 km from downtown Lisbon.


    Aeroporto Portela - Estação do Oriente

    Arriving From Porto Airport

    Take a public transportation or taxi to one of the train stations, Campanhã or S. Bento, or rent a car and enter A1, heading South.

    Porto Airport (Aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro) is located 11 km from downtown Porto. The main road accesses are the Porto/Lisboa highway A1.

    We strongly advise you to take a taxi to go from Aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro to Campanhã station.

    By bus - Aveiro Urban Transport (SMA/TUA)

    Aveiro Urban Transport (SMA/TUA) is the bus service which runs 14 routes around the whole of the municipality. There are two inner routes that run within the city.

    River branches penetrate in the city creating an exceptional connection between aquatic and urban ways.

    Boats - named Moliceiros - animate the city.
    Along chanelside quarters one finds this symbiosis in each step.
    Narrow streets, with welcoming people, lead to small Churches wich are symbols of the religious spirit.
    The salt and the lagoon

    Located on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, about 240 km North of Lisbon and 80 km South of Porto. Aveiro has been known for its seaways and salt production mentioned in documents dating back to year 959.

    The University

    The University came to bring new dynamics to the city. More active cultural life, the joy of youth, the creation of new animation spaces. There is an interactive map of the University Campus available online. You may use it to locate the Department of Mathematics or other University buildings.

    The nearst sand beaches are Barra and Costa Nova (about 6 km from downtown). The local Tourist Office - Rota da Luz will be pleased to help you.

    The weather is mild and the temperature rarely exceeds 30°C in the Summer, or drops below 10°C in the Winter. For more information about the current weather check the Instituto de Meteorologia de Portugal. You may also inspect the most recent Meteostat image for Europe.
    Dunas de São Jacinto

    The great highlight of the surrounding region is the Dunas de São Jacinto, a nature reserve where it is possible to admire the region´s native fauna and flora.
